Collection: Pomerol
Pomerol borders its sister appellation St-Emilion to the west, almost as an extension of the sloping plateau. Despite the tiny vineyard area of just 750 hectares, this appellation produces some of the greatest wines in the world (Petrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, L'Evangile). There are no tourist attractions here, no bars or restaurants, just vineyards and scattered houses, all of which are called "château". There is no town center in Pomerol, the only small cluster of houses is in the immediate vicinity of the much-photographed church, the symbol of this famous appellation.
But Pomerol wines were not always so famous. Their rise actually only began after the Second World War and is closely linked to one name, Jean-Pierre Moueix. He came to the region in 1930, recognized the great potential early on and was able to exploit it after overcoming the economic crisis and war. During this time, the négoçiant from Libourne bought the Trotanoy, Lagrange and La-Fleur-Pétrus wineries and secured the distribution rights for other châteaus. Later he was also able to secure shares in Pétrus, and today the family also owns this estate outright, which underlines the dominance of the Moueix family.
